SFSFF in Pordenone

Delegates of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival recently returned from the Giornate del Cinema Muto in Pordenone, Italy. It was a marvelous week of rediscoveries, restorations, and beautiful music...and inspiration!

One of the most exciting programs at the Giornate this year was a collection of films starring Anna Sten. The Ukrainian-born Sten had a successful career in Russia and Germany before catching the eye of Hollywood mogul Samuel Goldwyn, who brought her to the states and tried to make her into the next Garbo. But none of the projects that Goldwyn fashioned for Sten were successful, and they parted ways, leaving Sten an interesting footnote in the history of American cinema.

The group of Sten's silent titles at the Giornate included Earth in Chains (USSR, 1927), The Girl with the Hatbox (USSR, 1927), Agent Provocateur (USSR, 1927), and a very special film from the Museo del Cine in Buenos Aires – the same people who discovered the complete Metropolis in their archive – My Son (USSR, 1928), considered the most important find of a silent-era Russian film since the additional footage from Ivan the Terrible.

Meraviglioso!
